MCPHERSONS MERLOT - Australia This is a powerful wine, exhibiting brambly aromas and flavours of blackberries, black cherries and some toasty oak. Or that's what they reckon anyway! Not particularly raved about at the wine tasting last week, but I thought it was "Smoother than a Cashmere codpiece" & slipped down a treat. A magnum of South African sparkling for the first person to name the actor that used that expression and the beer he was advertising in the early '90's!! Exciting!! |

ALAIN PARET - LE CINQUET ROUGE - Vins de Pays d'Oc, Southern France This wine, produced in the department of Herault on arid soils of a single grape variety (syrah), is reputed to be as sunny & powerful as the climate in which she was born. In a deep purple color, it has a fruity nose with the fragrance of oriental spices and toast. Beware of a little sediment, but it slipped down very fast - leaving us begging for more. |

ARGIOLAS - "Serra Lori" Rosé - SARDINIA In accordance with the fact that the entire British Summer has now been and gone, I thought we ought to have a Rosé quickly before it gets too cold! This had a very positive response at the tasting last week. Good old-fashioned rosé with plenty of fruit but, dry and without that new-world sweetness. |

TENUTA MAGGIORE - Cortese IGT 'Sentito' - Lombardy, N.ITALY Cortese is a white-wine grape from northwest Italy, mainly Piedmont and in this case Lombardy. It generally produces good-quality, high-acid wines with a delicate, fruity aroma & flavour. Gavi di Gavi from Piedmont, which is among the most expensive Italian white wines is made purely from the Cortese grape. |

SIMONSIG SAUVIGNON SEMILLON Semillon is a white-wine grape now planted around the world, and in most cases, turns out neutral-flavored, mediocre wines. Combine Sémillon with Sauvignon Blanc, however, and the resulting wines can be quite extraordinary. Sauvignon Blanc adds the missing acidity & aroma while Sémillon tempers Sauvignon Blanc's tendency toward grassiness. Blending the two grapes creates a richer, more complex wine than either can create alone. |

ALDRIDGE ESTATE SEMILLON/CHARDONNAY - SE AUSTRALIA Semillon Chardonnay used to be a more commonly found blend than nowadays. In contrast to the Simonsig above, the semillon marries well with the oaked chardonnay to produce wine high in alcohol and can often be low in acid and aroma. Sémillon is also known as Chevrier, Green Grape, and Wyndruif. |
