NIEL JOUBERT CABERNET SAUVIGNON - South Africa
Big, full, attractive nose with red and black berries and touch of ripe,
dark cherry. Keen, sweet oaky backing with vanilla and spice. Smooth
and soft in the mouth with supple, easy tannins yet enough to ensure
good development - "Grandad Aston's Favourite !"

ANDEAN MERLOT / MALBEC - Finca Las Moras, Argentina
50% Merlot & 50% Malbec - These are my two favourites. Argentina
produces soft Merlot, like Chile, but with a little more fruit. Malbec,
synonymous with the Argies, provides the deep colour, and spicy, powerful
tannins. The climate is just about perfect, and as far as I can see,
the only reason Argentina doesn't sell more wine here is 'Maradona'!

PEREGRINO SEMI CRIANZA PRIETO PICUDO - Tierra de Léon,
Spain (100 miles west of Rioja)
Predominantly Preito Picudo grape, supplemented with the Mencia and Tempranillo
grapes that make up the best Riojas. By "Semi-Crianza" it means
the wine is given 6 months in oak which helps to soften the wine and
gives a hint of vanilla. |

TURNING LEAF PINOT GRIGIO - California, USA
A light to medium-bodied wine with aromas of citrus blossoms and honeysuckle
followed by flavours of ripe pear and delicious nectarines, and a clean,
soft finish. Of course typically Italian, the Pinot Grigio grape has
been taken very successfully bythe Californians. I don't normally like
the Gallo wines, but this one does the trick! |

KUMALA COLOMBARD SAUVIGNON BLANC
A bit of a national monster I'm afraid, but as Colombard Sauvignon blends
go, this ain't half bad. The Colombard was traditionally distilled
to make Armagnac and Cognac. Normally twinned with Chardonnay, this
is much more to my taste - dry, some acidity and aromatic fruit. |

AC CÔTES DE DURAS SAUVIGNON BLANC - France
I'm afraid I couldn't find a logo for this one but being French, that's
no great surpirse! This is an area in the Southern Dordogne which we
have visited several times. Plenty of fruit for bite for the Sauvignon
Blanc Connoisseur but with a typical clean and crisp French style. |
