BENCHMARK SHIRAZ 2004 - South East Australia
Shiraz or Syrah began in the Rhone area and they kept it exclusively
for the top Hermitage and Côte-Rôtie. For long the other
countries simply didn't know what flavour it had. That is fast changing.
Shiraz is one of Australia's signatures and this does exactly as Shiraz
should. Deep purple/red colour with rich flavours of sweet fruit, chocolate
and the trademark pepper.

VILLARRICA CARMENERE 2001 - Colchagua, Chile
Carmènere is an old Bordeaux grape variety, now almost extinct
in France. Only really used in Chile it is often mistaken for Merlot,
although the Carmenere is a touch richer. I like the brown colour that
a wine has when a little older as this 2001 vintage has.

NADARIA CUSUMANO CABERNET SAUVIGNON - SICILY 2005
By contrast to the Carmenere, this is a young wine, being only 2005 vintage,
and when "the wife & I" tried it, it got progressively
better & better as we got further down the bottle - & not just
for the obvious reasons ! Not many Italian wines are made as a pure
grape varietal, but this works very well. |

PERLAS NURAGUS DI CAGLIARI - Sardinia 2005
Nuragus di Cagliari is one of the few original native grapes. In the
main the grapes of Sardinia are originally from Spain or Greece. This
is really nice and light and fruity - slipped down a treat! |

ARESTI SAUVIGNON BLANC - Chile 2005
Chile is one of my favourite countrys for wine production. Not least
for the excellent value they provide (Scottish blood neccessitates)
but also the great quality too! I frequently hold this up against many
Sauvignon Blancs from the popular (and sometimes over-priced) New Zealand
alternatives. |

LE SANGLIER GRENACHE BLANC - Pays de L'Aude, Provence
2005
"A crisp, dry wine with a light fresh and lively palate with notes
of apple and exotic fruits." Well that's what the book says, and
I found it hard to disagree! Grenache Blanc is commonly grown in the
south of France although without many admirers, hence why it is not widely
seen. Also look for pear aromas and aniseed in the best varieties. |
